Caroline Onarheim is one high flying, kite-loving chica! When she’s not out getting massive air snowkiting in the Scandinavian mountains she’s busy ripping it up on the water kitesurfing!
Born in Norway to some of the most perfect powder in the world, she loves grabbing a group of mates and heading to the snow. Caroline says snow-kiting is the ultimate sport: it has snow, height, and tons of hot, single boys! The only thing missing is more girls to get in on the action!
So, what are you waiting for? Check out our interview with this ExplorerGirl and crazy snowkiting chica to get the skinny on what she's all about.
EXP/G: What got you started in snowkiting?
Caroline: I took a kitesurfing course in the summer and that’s how I got addicted. Since Norway has the world’s best snow-kiting conditions it felt natural to start kiting on snow as
well. It also helped that I snowboarded before. I’m a full time kiter, it’s not a hobby, it’s a lifestyle!!!! (kiting-school-kiting-kiting-kiting)
EXP/G: How long have you been snowkiting?
Caroline: I started to kitesurf in June 2005 so my first time on snow must have been the same year, some time in December.
EXP/G: What is it about snowkiting that sets it apart from other snow sports like snowboarding, skiing etc?
Caroline: Snowkiting is the real deal. When you snowkite you use nature in a totally different way from snowboarding. When you snowkite you don’t use anything other than the wind and your kiting gear. The special thing about snowkiting is that you can ride into the mountains where nobody else has been before, and just have fun messing around with friends just doing what we love to do.
When you snowkite, every day is unique, there is always something new, like the places you go, the weather conditions, new tricks etc. The biggest difference from water-kiting [kitesurfing] must be that you can use your surroundings in a totally different way, like jumping down a cliff or riding in epic powder.
EXP/G: Where are your favourite places in the world to snowkite?
Caroline: I have only been snowkiting in Norway, since there is no need to go anywhere else. The best places in Norway are Finse, Hagastøl and Haukeliseter. It’s perfect, nice spots, good wind, excellent food, always good company and the snow stays there for a long, long time. (-cold :s)
EXP/G: Do you need any special weather conditions or can you snow-kite anywhere there is snow?
Caroline: You need stable wind and big areas (no problem) and a place to park your car (we never walk)
EXP/G: Snowkiting is a relatively obscure sport. Do you think it is becoming more popular?
Caroline: Hell yeah! This is a sport that has it all: speed, height, single hot boys! What more do you need. There almost too many boys I can share. We need more girls…

EXP/G: What are your favourite tricks?
Caroline: Big kiteloops are my favourite trick, and if you invite me down to Australia I’ll show you the rest I can do.
EXP/G: Do you ever get scared that you will take off and fly too high?
Caroline: It’s not the height that kills you it’s the landing! Of course you get a little bit scared if you go high, but when you’re safely back on the ground you smile and then you look over your shoulder to see who saw the trick.
EXP/G: How do you control a snow kite?
Caroline: Taking a course will show you how to control your kite, and it will make your experience much safer and more fun. The weather in the mountains can change fast so, you have to be prepared for everything.
EXP/G: What music is pumping through your iPod right now?
Caroline: When you’re riding into the mountains you don’t need an iPod, you can make you own music: sing as loud as you can! Nobody will hear you, but if they do they will already think you’re crazy!
